Professor Yao Yao Awarded JSPS LEADER Fellow Title and Project Funding

Recently, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) announced the recipients of the 2024 JSPS LEADER Fellow program. Dr. Yao Yao, a professor at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and a visiting scholar and researcher at the University of Tokyo, was honored with this prestigious title and the associated project funding. This year, 12 researchers worldwide received this title, with only two from China.

The JSPS LEADER Fellow program, initiated in 2016, aims to provide a stable and independent research environment for outstanding young researchers globally, supporting them in challenging new research fields. The program not only paves new career paths for researchers but also expects them to play significant roles in various research institutions.

The JSPS LEADER Fellow program is highly esteemed in the international academic community and is known for its competitive global selection process. The program aims to mitigate the adverse effects of various instability factors on young researchers, helping them achieve original results in new research fields. Additionally, it promotes international researcher mobility and knowledge exchange to address the rapid changes in global industrial structures. Through this program, MEXT and JSPS hope to cultivate a new generation of world-class research leaders with a pioneering spirit, injecting fresh vitality into the future of global scientific and academic research.

The funding provided by the program includes up to 12 million yen over two years for research expenses, 2 to 3 million yen per year for research environment maintenance for five years, and up to 10 million yen per year for industry-academia collaboration activities for up to five years.

Professor Yao Yao expressed that receiving the JSPS LEADER Fellow title is both an affirmation of his past research work and a valuable support for his future research development. He will continue to explore new research fields and contribute to international academic exchange and cooperation.
